Amid the gentle ripples of the water towns of Jiangnan, South Lake in Jiaxing flows quietly, bearing witness to the departure of that red boat a century ago. Over the past hundred years, through thick and thin, the people of South Lake have steadfastly advanced with the Party, infusing the red gene into their very being and writing tales of loyalty and responsibility in the surging tides of the times. On the occasion of the Party’s centenary, every inch of this land is suffused with joy, and every heart beats with deep affection for the Party.
The Red Boat Spirit Illuminates the Path Ahead
The Red Boat on South Lake is the birthplace of the Chinese Communist Party’s dream. In 1921, a group of young people with an average age of just 28 kindled the spark of revolution aboard a pleasure boat beneath the Misty Rain Pavilion. Since then, the Red Boat Spirit—characterized by the pioneering spirit of “breaking new ground and daring to lead the way,” the tenacious fighting spirit of “holding fast to ideals and persevering through countless setbacks,” and the dedicated spirit of “establishing the Party for the public good and serving the people with unwavering loyalty”—has become the most precious spiritual treasure of the people of South Lake.
Over the past century, the Red Boat Spirit has inspired generation after generation of Nanhu residents to bravely lead the way. From the bloody struggles of the New Democratic Revolution, through the arduous efforts during the period of socialist construction, to the innovative development since the advent of reform and opening-up, the people of Nanhu have consistently taken the Red Boat Spirit as their guiding principle, achieving remarkable accomplishments in every field. Whether it is scientific researchers overcoming technical hurdles, grassroots cadres taking root among the masses to solve pressing problems, entrepreneurs scaling new heights to pursue development, or ordinary workers selflessly dedicating themselves to their posts, the Red Boat Spirit has long been transformed into a practical guide, enabling everyone to forge greatness out of the ordinary.
The red lineage is passed down from generation to generation.
Red education has never been interrupted at South Lake. The South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall, located beside the Red Boat, welcomes over one million visitors each year, making it an important national base for patriotic education. Here, children listen to stories of the revolution; young people reaffirm their oath of joining the Party; and elderly visitors reminisce about the glorious years of the past. Through guided tours, repeated visits, and the display of countless cultural relics, the “red gene” is deeply embedded in the hearts of every individual.
Celebrating the Anniversary and Showcasing a New Look
On the occasion of the Party’s centenary, the people of Nanhu have expressed their blessings in a variety of ways. On city streets, the Five-Star Red Flag and the Party flag shine side by side; in rural fields, bountiful harvests blend seamlessly with a festive atmosphere. A series of cultural performances, thematic exhibitions, and specialized Party classes bring the Party’s century-long journey of struggle vividly to life.

Looking Ahead and Embarking on a New Journey
Standing at a new historical starting point, the people of Nanhu are keenly aware that a century is but the prologue and that the journey of struggle knows no end. In the face of the opportunities and challenges of the new era, they will continue to carry forward the Red Boat Spirit, embracing the mindset of “success need not be mine” and the sense of responsibility that “my contribution is essential to that success,” thereby writing a new chapter of glory.
In the realm of scientific and technological innovation, Nanhu will increase R&D investment, foster more high-tech enterprises, and inject new momentum into high-quality development. As twilight drapes South Lake in a delicate veil, beams of light and shadow leap from the lake’s surface at Red Boat Park, rippling like echoes of history and harmonizing with the symphony of our times. Narrative of Light and Shadow: Sailing from the Depths of History Toward the Future**
Using the Red Boat as its focal point, the projection lights cast a dynamic panorama across the lake: in 1921, aboard the painted boat on South Lake, revolutionary patriots sit around a table, their faint glow piercing the darkness; beneath the oil lamps in the bamboo huts of Jinggangshan, soldiers weave bamboo baskets and study revolutionary theory; along the Long March, the light of horse lanterns illuminates snow-capped peaks and iron cables, reflecting an unwavering resolve to “follow the Party”... As light and shadow shift and flow, the spirit of the Red Boat ignites like a spark that spreads into a prairie fire, illuminating the long and arduous journey of the Chinese revolution.
A projection light on the lakeside illuminates the story of Zhang Yi, a docent at the South Lake Revolutionary Memorial Hall, and his parents: three generations of the family have dedicated themselves to safeguarding the Red Boat, embodying through their actions the enduring legacy of the “Red Boat Spirit.” This touching tale was featured by China National Radio’s Voice of China, serving as a vivid educational example of red family values.
Nearly one hundred 150-watt high-brightness projectors are deployed across the square to cast the image of the National Day flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square onto the lake’s surface, creating a timeless dialogue between the two iconic sites: 76 years ago, the People’s Republic of China set sail from the humble beginnings of the Red Boat on South Lake; today, 76 years later, the Five-Star Red Flag waves proudly in Tiananmen Square alongside the lotus lanterns of South Lake, together bearing witness to the steady realization of the Chinese Dream.
The Red Boat lanterns on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing are the spark of history and the beacon of our times. As the projection lights illuminate the lake’s surface, what we behold is not merely a dazzling spectacle of light and shadow, but also a nation’s unwavering commitment to its original aspiration and its steadfast dedication to its mission. Let us follow the guiding light of these lanterns and, on the journey of the new era, forge a future that is broader and brighter!
