Guide to the Use of Lighting Equipment in Clothing Stores
The selection of store lighting fixtures and the design of lighting effects are directly linked to sales performance.
A beautifully decorated storefront must be equipped with high-quality lighting. Lighting is crucial for any store. Some stores have poorly designed lighting systems, others use lights that aren’t bright enough, and some even turn off the lights to save energy. Here are some lighting design tips for brick-and-mortar stores:
1. When selecting LED lighting fixtures and designing lighting for brick-and-mortar stores, the following key requirements must be met:
1. The lighting in the main aisle at the store entrance must be bright enough to highlight the store’s ambiance and image, while also setting it apart from the surrounding shops.
2. Pay attention to the lighting balance among store entrances, aisles, and shelves to guide customers into the store and naturally establish their shopping flow.
Pay attention to the relationship among overall store lighting, localized lighting, and accent lighting to create a welcoming atmosphere while highlighting the products.
3. General store lighting may use horizontal illumination, while apparel and shelving should be illuminated with vertical lighting (such as spotlights).
4. For three-dimensional products (such as models), the positioning of lighting fixtures should ensure that the light direction and luminance distribution enhance the three-dimensional effect.
5. Reflective surfaces such as mirrors, display cases, and glass shelves should be avoided.
2. Lighting for Trendy Fashion Accessory Stores
Infusing a fashion boutique with a distinct personality that sets it apart and makes it stand out in customers’ minds is no small feat. Lighting is the primary tool for shaping a store’s image, and the choice of lighting must be carefully aligned with the target customer base. The flexibility of lighting zones can be readily leveraged to define the store’s identity, highlight key products, and guide customers’ attention. Selecting appropriate lighting fixtures allows brands to progressively cater to evolving customer tastes and preferences. The first step is to elevate the store’s image, followed by integrating interior design to develop the optimal lighting solution. To illustrate this approach more clearly, let us consider three fashion accessories boutiques as case studies.
1. Premium Brand Store
A specialty store featuring relatively low base illuminance (300 lux), warm color temperature (2500–3000 K), and excellent color rendering (Ra > 90).
2. General fashion stores
Average illuminance of 300–500 lux, natural color temperature of 3000–3500 K, and excellent color rendering (Ra > 90), combined with extensive accent lighting, create a relaxed yet dramatically engaging ambiance.
3. Department Store
High base illuminance (500–1,000 lux), cool color temperature (4,000 K), and excellent color rendering (Ra > 80) create a warm and relaxed ambiance. Fewer spotlights are used to highlight special merchandise in specific areas of the store.
III. Selection of Lighting Fixtures
The purpose of lighting design is to help customers easily locate the styles they like and comfortably try on or experience the texture of the garments. The light directly illuminating the apparel should be bright, with an illuminance of over 1,000 lux. For first-tier specialty stores, high-color-rendering sodium lamps (2,500 K) are recommended; for second- and third-tier fashion boutiques, LED track lights or COB spotlight fixtures (3,000–3,500 K) are preferred. Superior color rendering (Ra > 80) can effectively guide customers in making purchasing decisions.
Lighting fixtures suitable for illumination include LED track lights, COB track lights, COB spotlight fixtures, LED ceiling spotlights, LED can lights, COB can lights, and other environmentally friendly, green lighting products.
Lighting should be focused on the products (>750 lux), with natural color rendering that matches the garment colors (2750–3000 K) and high color fidelity (Ra > 80–90). In Class 3 stores, it is more effective to strategically install recessed or suspended linear fluorescent fixtures near the clothing racks.
4. Selection of LED Lighting Fixtures for the Exhibition Area
The display area employs a variety of artistic design elements to showcase the garments worn by the in-store models in their most flattering light. Demonstrations should be staged with lighting ranging from highly dramatic (AF30:1) to low-dramatic (AF5:1).
Brighter lighting makes the displayed merchandise more visible. For models wearing evening gowns standing by a dining table, high-color-rendering sodium or halogen lamps are recommended, while metal-halide lamps are better suited for illuminating beachwear. In lower-end stores, energy-efficient tubular fluorescent fixtures can provide additional illumination in display areas.
Four Tips to Enhance Lighting in Clothing Stores
Resale:
Well-designed lighting can enhance the perceived value of merchandise in a clothing store, boost customers’ purchase intent, and deliver optimal visual merchandising results. So how should store lighting be arranged to create a bright, inviting atmosphere that draws more foot traffic and, in turn, increases sales?
1. The eye-catching brilliance of a sign is typically achieved through neon lighting. Neon lights not only illuminate the sign but also enhance the visibility of the store at night, while simultaneously creating a lively and cheerful atmosphere. Neon decorations should be innovative and distinctive, allowing for a wide variety of shapes and colors.
2. Indoor general lighting: This is the primary lighting for the entire store. You can select different LED luminaires based on the store’s style. The brightness should be determined according to the size of the space, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
3. Auxiliary Lighting: Auxiliary lighting primarily includes window display lighting and counter lighting. Taking a clothing store as an example, appropriate lighting is also essential. Today we will focus on clothing stores. For such stores, window display lighting should minimize projections and reduce shadows. Diffuse lighting or cross-lighting with non-directional illumination can be used to eliminate the interference caused by shadows.
4. To emphasize a three-dimensional effect, combined lighting with side lighting can be employed. Display-case lighting fixtures should offer excellent color rendering; mid- to high-end apparel stores should incorporate accent lighting, which may take the form of spotlights or lighting installed directly on the shelves. Localized illumination can also be achieved using recessed or suspended straight-tube fluorescent lamps.
5. The color rendering of fitting-room lighting should be improved, as customers are primarily evaluating the color appearance of the garments. To enhance the natural look of customers’ skin tones, consider using light sources with a lower color temperature to impart a slight reddish cast. In fitting rooms without a dedicated fitting mirror, the lighting can be dimmed slightly to create a warmer ambiance. Additionally, the lighting in front of the fitting mirror should be designed to minimize glare.
